Sherman ISD Welcomes New Director of Special Populations

Melissa RamirezSherman ISD is excited to announce that Melissa Ramirez, an experienced supervisor and administrator of special education programs, will join the district as the next director of special populations. 

Ramirez joins SISD from Highland Park ISD, where she most recently served as assistant director of special education. She also worked as an evaluation supervisor and bilingual educational diagnostician in Highland Park. 

Her previous experience includes time as a bilingual educational diagnostician, special education teacher and general education teacher in Frisco and El Paso ISDs, where she taught resource, inclusion and in a self-contained classroom. 

In Sherman, she will lead the development and delivery of services for all students with special needs, including those served in dyslexia and Section 504 programs. Her role also oversees the referral and evaluation process to ensure that students are appropriately placed, and ongoing reviews to support individual student needs.  

“Every child should have the opportunity to succeed to their fullest potential and be a contributing citizen of their community,” Ramirez said. “I believe to achieve this success, it takes not only the commitment of dedicated teachers and special education professionals, but also collective collaboration between the school and family to make sure each student is equipped to excel. That is why I chose Sherman ISD as my next home away from home; I want to contribute to the amazing things happening for the students in Sherman ISD by helping to build Bearcats!” 

Ramirez has a bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at El Paso, master of education from Texas Woman’s University and is currently pursuing her doctorate in education, leadership and organization from Texas Woman’s University. 

She and her husband Art have been married for 27 years, and they have two grown children.
