Sherman ISD to Begin Search for New Head Football Coach

After five years leading the Sherman High School Bearcat football team, Sherman ISD’s head football coach and athletic coordinator, JD Martinez, has accepted a position with Bridgeport ISD in Bridgeport, Texas. Sherman ISD will begin its search for a new head coach immediately.

This past football season, the Bearcats tied for a second-place finish in District 7-5A and earned a spot in the playoffs three of the past four years. Martinez had 17 football student-athletes sign to continue their football and academic careers in college. This school year, 27 football players received All-District, Academic All-State, or All-Texomaland Honors.

"Coach Martinez committed five years to the Sherman ISD athletic programs. His leadership helped our district establish a cohesive athletic pipeline that extends to our middle school campus and youth sports leagues," Sherman ISD Athletic Director Bob Jones expressed. "Notably, Coach Martinez has been dedicated to ensuring that our young men see the value in being student-athletes with high character, dedication, and commitment to excellence. As a district, we thank him for the positive impact he has made on the students in Sherman ISD."

During a special team meeting on Monday morning, the Bearcat football staff and players were informed by Martinez of his upcoming departure.

Jones will now lead an extensive search for Martinez's successor. The district is launching a survey for the community to provide input on the characteristics the new coach will need to succeed in the position.

"We're seeking feedback from parents, employees, and community stakeholders regarding desired characteristics and qualities potential candidates should possess for the position," Jones said. "The information we collect from the survey will guide us during the hiring process. We value our community's input and willingness to participate in our survey."
