Sherman ISD Names New Principal of Sory Elementary

As Sory Elementary staff and students plan to say goodbye to Principal Steven Traw at the end of the school year, they are also preparing to welcome a familiar face as their new campus principal.

Sherman ISD announced this week that the current Sory assistant principal, Mindy Schoen, will assume the role of principal, taking over for Traw who will become principal of the newly formed Dillingham Elementary. Schoen has served as assistant principal at Sory for the past two years and has helped refine campus instructional practices that have ultimately enhanced teaching, learning, and student success.

Mindy and Steven "I am proud to be named as the new principal at Sory Elementary and I will focus on carrying on the rich traditions that have been established at our school," Schoen said. "I am very motivated to continue the strong family environment because I truly believe significant learning cannot occur without significant relationships. Each day I come to work, I look for ways to connect with staff, students, parents, and community members to continue fostering those meaningful relationships."

Prior to joining Sherman ISD, Schoen worked for Frisco ISD as a behavior specialist, serving over 12 campuses from early childhood to high school. Before that, she worked in Plano ISD as a special education teacher and a team leader. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David Hicks, says that Schoen’s years of experience, hands-on approach, and knowledge of Sory’s rich campus traditions made her the perfect candidate for the position.

“Mrs. Schoen is the perfect match for Sory Elementary. Over the past two years, her instructional expertise has enhanced our teachers’ ability to impact students academically,” Hicks said. “She is deeply committed to building positive relationships, continuing the rich traditions that make Sory a special place, and helping all students achieve at the highest level.”

Mr. Traw shared the same sentiments about Schoen and expressed that he feels extremely confident in his successor.

"I am thrilled that Mrs. Schoen will be taking over the reins for me at Sory next year. She has immersed herself into our culture since the first time she stepped on campus, and I'm excited to see her have the opportunity to help make Sory an even greater place for our Huskies," Traw said. "Mrs. Schoen has a strong focus on student growth and success, and enjoys celebrating those successes. I am excited to see Henry Sory Elementary thrive under her leadership."

Mrs. Schoen grew up in Sherman, Texas, and graduated from Sherman High School. She is proud to be a hometown girl who loves the Bearcats. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Austin College and a Master’s of Education from Lamar University. She is a proud third-generation educator. Mindy has been married to David Schoen for 27 years and they have four children and one grandchild.
