Sherman Firefighter Serves the Community and Classrooms

Jeff Jones is an engineer and paramedic with the Sherman Fire Department. He’s been in the fire and rescue service for over 30 years and enjoys serving the citizens of Sherman.

firefighter jeff jones On days he’s not at the fire station, you will likely find Jones substituting at any one of the Sherman ISD campuses. He’s one of 178 community members who partner with Sherman ISD as a substitute teacher for the district.

This school year, Sherman ISD and surrounding districts are short-handed in the area of substitute teachers due to COVID-19. Although the district has been actively recruiting, there is still a great need for substitutes. Jones previously subbed for SISD before COVID-19 struck in March, and he happily answered the call to come back into the SISD classrooms at the start of the school year.

“Being a firefighter has prepared me to be a sub by teaching me how to be fluid and flexible,” expressed Jones. “We never know what type of situations we’ll be called to handle in the community, so when I come into the classroom we have to be ready for anything as well, like modifying teaching plans or helping students.”

Jones is a doting, attentive single father with a son who plays baseball at SHS. He initially started subbing to be more involved in his son’s school district. He beams as he talks about his time as a substitute teacher.

“I love subbing for SISD, no matter what school I’ve subbed at the staff has been so helpful,” Jones said. “Everything is always prepared for my assignment, and they make me feel like family by the end of the day.”

SISD can’t thank the men and women of the Sherman Fire and Rescue department enough for their courage and service to the city of Sherman, especially Mr. Jones who is splitting his time saving Sherman residents and Building Bearcats.

“The most fulfilling part about subbing is being able to help these amazing teachers,” said Jones. “I’m grateful I can help relieve some of the short-handedness in the district.”

Sherman ISD is currently recruiting confident and experienced substitute teachers to join the district.
