Sherman ISD Takes All Security Matters Seriously

Sherman, Texas – The Sherman ISD Police Department has arrested two Sherman High School students for their involvement in making a false threat that caused a security incident at the campus.

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, a female caller in a distressed voice called the SISD Central Office and claimed that her son was on his way to SHS and intended to harm the campus. This resulted in an immediate and significant response from the Sherman ISD Police Department, district staff, campus administration, and supporting agencies, including the Sherman Police Department, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). All parties took immediate action to secure the SHS campus and monitor for a potential intruder. During this time, all doors to the school remained locked and the perimeter was secured while a normal class schedule continued on the inside of Sherman High. 

Since Wednesday, the Sherman ISD Police Department has tirelessly investigated this matter, engaged many different agencies, and accessed sophisticated resources. The investigation has resulted in the arrest of two Sherman High School students who will be charged under Texas Penal Code 22.07 for making a terroristic threat. This is a 3rd degree felony, punishable by up to $10,000 and two to 10 years in prison. These students will also face appropriate disciplinary consequences under the Sherman ISD Student Code of Conduct. 

“We take threats of all kinds very seriously, and the safety of our schools is our top priority,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tyson Bennett. “Though the Sherman High School campus was never in danger, Sherman ISD supports the full prosecution of any individual that threatens harm to our students, staff, and campuses.”

Sherman ISD is fortunate to have its own police department which brought this matter to a quick resolution. The district encourages parents to take this opportunity to remind their students that while they may be “joking” about threatening harm to our campuses or other individuals, claims of this nature will be taken seriously and met with real consequences.
