Strategic Plan Envisions Student Experience in Sherman ISD

Sherman ISD has laid out a plan for teaching and learning to guide the district for the next three school years.

The strategic plan, developed through the Texas Strategic Leadership (TSL) program, envisions the desired student experience in Sherman ISD and identifies strategic priorities and initiatives to achieve student outcome goals.

Focus areas include:

  • Research-Based Instructional Strategies (RBIS)
  • Instructional Capacity Building (Coaching)
  • Talent (Recruitment, Development and Retention)

The strategic plan was developed through a series of meetings over the course of the 2023-24 school year involving a committee of SISD staff, School Board members, parents and community members. The process was facilitated by Region 10 Educational Service Center (ESC) in collaboration with the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

Stakeholder surveys, school/classroom visits and an analysis of lesson plans, curriculum resources and other district documents were used to assess the state of the district and target areas for improvement.

“We had a lot of thoughtful conversations throughout the TSL committee process that provided a deeper perspective of our strengths and opportunities for growth in SISD,” said School Board President Wendy Vellotti. “I’m thankful to everyone involved who helped narrow our focus and set meaningful goals for the success of our students.”

The committee also updated the district’s vision, mission and values and envisioned a student experience to reflect the strategic goals and outcomes desired for students. Sherman ISD aims to develop specific character traits by providing the following experiences for students:

Courageous
Every day, each student will be encouraged while being given the opportunity to boldly take risks.

Problem Solver
Every day, each student will be given the opportunity to struggle productively and collaborate with others to solve problems.

Resilient
Every day, each student will learn how to overcome obstacles by growing from their mistakes.

Self Motivated
Every day, each student will recognize their significance, value their learning, and strive to reach their full potential.

Engaged
Every day, each student will be authentically engaged in a meaningful learning experience in their classroom, school, and community.

Empathetic
Every day, each student will demonstrate respect and understanding of others’ feelings.

Sherman ISD will implement the strategic plan over the next three years, working to align district and campus systems with key initiatives. Region 10 will continue to provide metrics and other support as SISD tracks progress toward student outcome goals.

"TSL has been a great opportunity for SISD to reflect on where we are as a district and how we can enhance our systems to benefit student learning,” said Dr. Thomas O’Neal, lone finalist for superintendent. “We are committed to putting this plan into action and enhancing the educational experience for all our students."
