SHS Celebrates Outstanding AP Students

SHS students hold yard signs showing they scored a 4 or 5 on their AP ExamNearly 100 Sherman High School students were recognized for their excellent performance on their May 2023 Advanced Placement Exams at the annual AP Breakfast on Oct. 17.

A total of 440 students took 573 exams in May with 21% of students taking one or more exams. Over half of the exams taken received a score of a 3, 4, or 5, meaning the student could receive credit for a college course at any Texas college or university. In all, 25 SHS students achieved a 5, the highest possible score.

Tested subjects included English, Calculus, Environmental Science, World History, Macroeconomics, Psychology, Spanish Literature, Music Theory, Computer Science and Art.

Among the high scorers was Rachel Hammett, who earned every single possible point on her AP 2D Art and Design Portfolio. She is one of 338 students in the nation to receive a perfect score on that exam.

“I was pretty shocked,” she said. “This isn’t multiple choice, and it’s judged individually with a rubric. I thought this was even more impossible.”

“I have had students score 5s but I have never received recognition of a student scoring a perfect score and being one of 338 students in the world,” said Sherry Young, Hammett’s AP art teacher. “It is very exceptional.”

To top off her perfect score, Hammett also earned 5s on the four other AP Exams she took last school year, earning her the AP Scholar with Distinction award.Rachel Hammett receives an award from Scott Johnston for her perfect AP Exam score
