Sherman ISD Welcomes Hundreds for Grandparents’ Day Brunch

GP The longstanding tradition of National Grandparents Day represents the significant role that grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren. Sherman ISD recognizes the importance of that role and celebrates the holiday annually by welcoming grandparents to the district’s elementary campuses to dine with their grandchildren.

On Monday, Sherman ISD commemorated the day with a “Brunch for Lunch” theme. Across seven elementary campuses, hundreds of loving grandparents filled the campus cafeterias to eat pancakes and waffles with their grandchildren. Grandparents from as far away as Chicago came for this special day that celebrates the important relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren.

“I live out of state [Chicago] and I’ve never been here, so I wanted to be here today with my kids,” Elia Hernandez explained after she surprised her granddaughter Charlee at Crutchfield Elementary with a visit. “She didn’t know I was coming, it was a good surprise.”

“My grandmother looks pretty,” Charlee expressed as she sat next to her grandmother. “I’m going to ask her to watch some TV later.”

GP Marsha Omayebu spent time with her grandchild Ze’ Vaeh at Jefferson Elementary after promising her grandaughter she would attend the Grandparents' Day brunch.

“I love my grandmother a lot because she said she was going to eat with me,” Ze’Vaeh said after dining with her grandmother.

Omayebu shared the same sentiments.

“I was delighted when I saw my grandchild because she looked like she was glad to see me,” Omayebu said.

Grandparents and students concluded their morning visit by taking photos, smiling, laughing and giving each other big hugs. It was definitely a grand occasion for all in attendance and Omayebu has an idea as to why the day is so special.

“Grandparents are the best because we do the things that the parents won’t do and we let our grandchildren have everything they want to have,” she said. “I love my grandchildren!”

We thank all of the grandparents that visited our scholars today!
