Sherman ISD recognized 32 retirees Monday night at the Retiree Dinner and gifted them a rocking chair as a part of a tradition. In total, their years of service in education added up to 893 years.

Crutchfield Elementary's Tammy Williams technically retired after 20 years at SISD and 38 years in total in December, but the call of education hasn't completely faded. She still tutors some kids in groups when needed. Williams may be retired from Texas, but Oklahoma, where she started her career and where her grandchildren are, isn't too far away.

"I'm ending one chapter of my life and starting another one," Williams said. "I've met lots of wonderful educators, children and parents. I actually had some of my students from when I started at Dillingham have children at Crutchfield this past year."

Marc McClendon stayed at Fairview Elementary for all of his 20 years at SISD before retiring with 33 years of service to education. He called the moment "bittersweet" since he has a passion for education, and retirement means he is parting ways with the job.

"I originally was a grocery store manager, and the kids would ask me questions like, how does this work, or, how does it know it's green beans when you run the can across," McClendon said. "I realized that I wanted to become a teacher, so I started teaching in Oklahoma."

After 12 years there, McClendon then came to Sherman, and the interview for the Fairview position always stuck with him. The principal at the time invited McClendon out to the campus, showed him his classroom and introduced the other staff.

"I thought I was just coming for an interview, but when you're met with such a warm reception like that, I had already decided," McClendon said. "And it's been that way."

For some retirees like Gerry Cooper, who retired after 20 years at SISD as a custodian, most recently at Wakefield Elementary, retirement hasn't really sunk in yet.

"I'm taking it day by day, hoping everything will come together," he said. "I'm looking forward to it. My wife is looking forward to it. I'm excited."
