Wakefield Field Trip Brings History to Life

This week, Wakefield Elementary School 4th Graders got the opportunity to travel to Austin to experience what they're learning in Texas History.

There they visited the State Capitol and the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Students saw first-hand where Texas laws are made as they toured the State Capitol including the Senate and House of Representatives chambers, as well as visit the offices of Senator Drew Springer and State Representative Reggie Smith. At the museum, students traveled back in time through the Texas Revolution and learned about the events that created our Lone Star identity.

Sherman ISD is thrilled to send students on field trips that not only enrich their education but also provide lifelong memories.

“Going to Austin in 4th grade is not only fun but academically enlightening as 4th grade is when Texas history is introduced in length for the first time,” said Nicole Barry, 4th Grade Teacher at Wakefield. “Being able to see the capital, Congress in session, and experience Texas history in a tangible way at the Bullock Museum was a field trip that the students will remember for a lifetime.”

The Discover Texas Field Trip was funded by a 2022 Sherman Education Foundation grant, and organized by Education in Action, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering educated and involved young people.

Jennifer Pasteur, Executive Director of Education in Action, says “Student activities during Discover Texas Field Trips reinforce and supplement Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives in fun and hands-on ways at significant Texas sites that bring the content to life.”
