Galveston ISD has named Bob Jones, current Sherman ISD Athletic Director, as its Athletic Director in a Board of Trustees meeting on May 18.
Jones joined Sherman ISD in February 2020 and led the athletic department through the COVID-19 pandemic and UIL uncertainty of the 2020-2021 season. He oversaw the transition to the current Sherman High School and its new athletic facilities, as well as renovations and additions to SISD middle school athletic fields.
“It’s been a great honor to work with these student athletes and coaches,” Jones said. “There is so much talent here in Sherman, and the SISD Athletic Program is in a strong position for future success. The world-class facilities and support of the Bearcat community is unmatched, and I am grateful to have worked with this outstanding administration.”
Jones, who owns a home in Galveston, said that he accepted the opportunity at Galveston ISD to be closer to family.
Superintendent Tyson Bennett thanked Jones for his hard work and dedication during his tenure in Sherman.
“Bob has made a tremendous impact on our programs and facilities, and we wish him well,” Bennett said. “We are dedicated to continuing the strong athletic legacy that Sherman has, and look forward to finding the next great leader of our athletic program.”
Sherman ISD has begun the search for a new athletic director. Applicants can complete an online application at www.shermanisd.net/apply.
Previous to Sherman, Jones served as Athletic Director for Bastrop ISD, which is located just southeast of Austin. During his tenure in Bastrop, Jones oversaw the expansion of the athletic program as the district added a second 5A high school.
