A Grayson County Commissioners Court resolution highlighted early childhood education the morning of April 5 and proclaimed April 2-8 as the Week of the Young Child.

"Whereas young children need developmentally appropriate, exceptional and available early care and educational settings," Grayson County Judge Bill Magers read from the proclamation at their April 5 meeting.

Sherman ISD has two high-quality early childhood education centers: Fred Douglass Early Childhood Center (ECC) and Perrin ECC. The district also offers Early Headstart at Jefferson Learning Center. Of the more 8,000 children ages 0 to 5, about 25% of them are in low-income households, said Dr. Susan Whitenack, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at the meeting.

"We wanted to highlight not only all the work that we do as a district but also the work other child care centers provide," Dr. Whitenack said.

SISD and the United Way of Grayson County are working together to improve access to early childhood care, and Stephanie Chandler, UWGC President and CEO, was excited for the future.

"This is a national movement," Chandler said. "We're excited to put Grayson County on the map and start leading efforts in the area."
