District Closely Monitoring Weather Situation

Wintery weather is upon us again this week. Decisions to open or close school due to bad weather have a significant impact on all of us. Our top priority is always the safety of our students, families and staff.

Just a reminder, during inclement weather, district staff remain in constant contact with local meteorologists, city and county law enforcement and neighboring school district leaders to monitor weather and road conditions. Every effort is made to make decisions on school closures by the night before. However, due to the timing of the current weather event, we will make a decision by 6:00am on Wednesday, February 23rd, regarding a potential school closure.  As always, if you have not heard from the District, a normal school day is planned.

The following information is considered in all decisions related to closing or delaying school due to inclement weather:

  • Information from road conditions from transportation staff and from TxDOT. We give careful consideration to the most dangerous roads in the District. Even if your street looks clear, travel elsewhere may be dangerous.
  • Amount of snow and ice accumulated
  • Short- and long-term weather forecasts
  • Building conditions (Schools must have electricity, heat, and water.)

Area superintendents work collaboratively and are often able to make similar decisions to open or close schools. However, because factors may be different in each district, Sherman ISD will make the best decision for our students and staff members.

The District will use several communication avenues to notify parents, students and staff. Our automated phone calling system will be utilized in the event of a delay or school closure. If you recently changed phone numbers and have not notified the District, please make certain your information is accurate by contacting the registrar at your child’s campus.

In addition, we will post the information on the SISD Facebook page, Twitter and on SISD’s website (www.shermanisd.net). We will also send out email and text notifications, and alert all local television and radio outlets.

Please do not rely solely on the phone call from the District. The District’s Facebook and Twitter accounts are the first places information is updated. The SISD website homepage, calls, emails and text messages are generally the second wave of communication received, and television network updates are typically last (because there is often a lag time between when we send the information to them and when it is posted).

Please keep in mind that SISD will not call, text, or e-mail  to confirm school is in session. Parents, employees and students should assume a normal school day unless notified otherwise.
