The Sherman ISD Board of Trustees has made thoughtful and balanced technology use in the classroom a priority, with an emphasis on ensuring technology supports teachers and enhances the meaningful interactions and learning experiences already taking place in SISD classrooms.

Trustees are working alongside teachers and district leaders to take a closer look at device use across Sherman ISD. The district plans to study current tools and practices, gather feedback from students, teachers and families, and develop recommendations to reduce unnecessary screen time.

SISD aims to strengthen teaching and learning and enhance the student experience through reduced screen time and more intentional technology use. The goal is to support academic growth by creating more opportunities for direct, teacher-led instruction and meaningful student engagement. This can be accomplished by emphasizing:

  • Pen & Paper - Prioritizing writing, handwriting, reading and tangible materials that build foundational skills.
  • Hands-On Learning - Expanding project-based learning, discussion, exploration and authentic interaction with ideas and materials.
  • Technology as a Tool - Using technology to supplement instruction, never to replace teacher-led learning or real-world connection.
  • Productive Struggle - Developing cognitive strength and critical thinking through hard work, practice and meaningful challenge.

Next steps are to better understand current student device use in Sherman ISD and to define when technology aids instruction and when non-digital approaches should be prioritized. Tools and platforms will be evaluated for instructional purpose, effectiveness, utilization and value.

Once the review is complete, district administrators will bring recommendations to the Board for consideration. Those recommendations may include screen time limits, guidance for instructional practices, implementation support and communication with families and staff.

“In Sherman ISD, we want technology to be a purposeful tool that strengthens learning while ensuring students remain actively engaged in the process,” said Amy Pesina, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for Sherman ISD. “This review will help ensure device use aligns with our district goals and values and supports individual student learning needs.”
