New Multipurpose Stadium Set to Open This Fall

Sherman High School has set its varsity football schedule for the 2026 season, and with it the date of the first home game at the Bearcats’ new multipurpose stadium at SHS.

The first varsity game in the new 8,000-seat stadium will be held on Friday, September 18 versus The Colony High School. 

Members of the public will get the opportunity to see the stadium before the home opener during a community open house tentatively set for Saturday, September 12. More details will be available as the date approaches. 

The Bearcats will kick off their varsity football season with the Battle of the Ax on Friday, August 28 at Denison’s Munson Stadium. The team’s full schedule is listed below.

The University Interscholastic League announced new athletic districts for football, basketball and volleyball in February, setting off work to schedule district and non-district games. 

Sherman ISD’s goal throughout the process was to provide for a successful opening of the new stadium, which is being built three years sooner than initially planned. Construction on the site, which leverages the existing athletic field, track and infrastructure at Sherman High School's Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex, began in early 2025. 

“We can’t wait to open the new stadium at SHS and provide our students and fans with a phenomenal experience for games, performances and other events,” said Dr. Thomas O’Neal, superintendent of schools for Sherman ISD. “We are grateful to voters for their support of the 2023 bond program and look forward to all the ways our students and community will benefit for generations to come.”

The new, five-story stadium includes 5,000 home-side seats, including 1,700 chair-back seats, and 3,000 visitor-side seats with great views of playing and running surfaces. Home stands on the west side of the facility will shade most fans from direct sun during evening events as the sun sets. 

The stadium also features improved accessibility, security, parking, concessions, restrooms, press box and a video score board. The final design and branding elements were selected by a committee of SISD staff, students and community members and approved by the City of Sherman earlier this year. 

Information regarding season tickets to games at the new stadium will be shared first with existing Bearcat Stadium season ticket holders later this spring. The historic Bearcat Stadium will continue to be used as Sherman continues to grow and the district expands.
