Sherman ISD Celebrates Stadium Groundbreaking
Sherman ISD celebrated the kickoff of construction of the new multipurpose stadium at Sherman High School on Feb. 6.
"We are gathered here not just to celebrate the start of a construction project, but to honor the dreams, hard work, and dedication that have led us to this pivotal moment," said Athletic Director Jeff Cordell. "This stadium will stand as a beacon in our community."
Students from band, cheer, athletics, Hi-Steppers all took part in the ceremony as the event welcomed in SISD parents, staff and community members.
"This new stadium represents more than just a field, more than just a place to play, but the heart of our community and the future for Bearcat Athletics," said Sherman High School sophomore Jack Miller. "Let it be a place where lessons are learned and not just about football but about life, how with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible."
The 8,000-seat stadium and adjacent site improvements will serve a variety of athletic and fine arts programs, including football, soccer, track and field, band, cheer, Hi-Steppers and more. Approximately 900 new parking spaces will also be added to serve the stadium and high school.
"As we look to the future and all the growth coming to Sherman, we know that this facility will better meet our needs,” Sherman superintendent Dr. Thomas O’Neal said. “None of this would be possible without the input of the design committee, the vision and leadership of our board of trustees and most importantly our community who believed in and supported the bond program."
The stadium was designed by VLK Architects and is being built by general contractor CORE Construction. It is expected to be complete in summer 2026, three years sooner than the 2029 opening shared with voters prior to the 2023 bond election.
Construction is also underway at SHS on a 33,000 square foot-expansion to the main campus that will add 20 classrooms and allow the school to serve more than 500 additional students.
