SHS Selects April Atterberry as Girls Coordinator, Head Softball Coach

Sherman ISD is excited to announce April Atterberry as the new girls coordinator and head softball coach at Sherman High School. Atterberry brings more than 15 years of experience in leadership, student athlete development and organization.

This marks a return to Sherman Bearcat Athletics for Atterberry, who served as the Sherman head softball coach from 2014 to 2016 and 2003 to 2007, when she led the Lady Cats to three consecutive playoff appearances in 2005, 2006 and 2007. She currently works as a special education teacher at Sherman’s Dillingham Elementary School.

“Coach Atterberry’s familiarity with the program made her a perfect fit for this position,” said Sherman ISD Athletic Director Alan McDougal. “I’m looking forward to the insights she’ll bring to Sherman Athletics and the direction she will take the team.”

Atterberry also previously served as the head softball coach at Alice ISD, where she led the team to historic achievements, and the girls coordinator and softball coach at Paris ISD, where she supervised multiple programs and fostered positive community relationships. Atterberry also worked as an SISD elementary physical education teacher from 2014 to 2021.

“I’m excited to come back to Bearcat Athletics and begin working on the development of current and future classes of Lady Cats,” Atterberry said. “I want to ensure all girls programs have what they need to succeed and take the softball team to a new level.”

Atterberry earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, where she played collegiate softball and earned multiple individual honors. She holds a teaching certification from East Texas A&M University, formerly Texas A&M-Commerce.
