Community Visits Elementary Schools for Last Look
Sherman ISD hosted an opportunity for members of the community to visit Crutchfield Elementary, Fairview Elementary and Wakefield Elementary before the schools are torn down following the 2024-25 school year.
Community open houses were held May 17 at each campus. These events were a chance for the public, including former students and staff, to walk the halls of each school, take pictures and share memories about their time at Crutchfield, Fairview and Wakefield.
The existing school buildings were all built in the 1950s and educated generations of Sherman students. New, larger school buildings that meet current educational standards and provide modern learning experiences for students and staff are being built in their place as Sherman continues to grow.
Replacement campuses for Crutchfield and Fairview elementary schools are under construction adjacent to the existing schools and will open in August 2025 for the new school year. After Wakefield Elementary is demolished, construction will begin on a new early childhood center for Sherman ISD, bringing the district’s Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start programs together in one location at the Wakefield site.
The new campuses are funded by the bond program passed by Sherman ISD voters in May 2023. Thanks to all the high-tech industry growth in Sherman, the construction projects are possible without an increase to the school district’s tax rate.
While Sherman ISD couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds for students and staff at the new schools, saying goodbye to the old Crutchfield, Fairview and Wakefield school buildings is bittersweet.
Demolition of Crutchfield and Fairview is set to take place in early June so that parking can be constructed at the current sites of the existing school buildings. Demolition of Wakefield will take place of few weeks later, with construction starting on the new early childhood center shortly after.
