Truancy Information
We believe that regular school attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his or her education—to benefit from teacher-led and school activities, to build each day’s learning on the previous day’s, and to grow as an individual. Absences from class may result in serious disruption of a student’s mastery of the instructional materials; therefore, every minute of instruction counts and we would like to thank you for making a special effort to ensure that your student maintains good attendance.
State law requires that students are in attendance at school a minimum of 90% of the days that school is in session, and campuses will notify a truancy officer when excessive absences occur. Truancy prevention measures include one or more of the following:
- Attendance behavior plan
- School-based community service
- Referral to counseling, mediation, mentoring, a teen court program, community-based services, or other in-school or out-of-school services aimed at addressing truancy.
If attendance is not improved after truancy prevention measures and a student fails to attend school on ten or more days or parts of days within a six‐month period, the campus may refer the case to a truancy court.
Parents could face potential court fines up to $500 depending on the number of offenses, and students could be issued court orders such as:
- Attending school with no unexcused absences
- Attending a non‐profit community‐based special program
- Completing community service
- Participating in tutoring
- Paying court costs
- Etc.
