• NEW PROGRAM FOCUSES ON IMPROVING STUDENT ATTENDANCE

How important is it for a student to attend school every day? Sherman ISD says it’s the first step to ensuring student achievement.

Research shows that attendance is an important part of a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Too many absences can cause poor performance on school work and students who miss school, even in elementary, are more likely to be at-risk for dropping out later in high school. Establishing positive attendance habits early is key to giving students the greatest advantages for lifelong success.

Missing school, even just a few days a semester, can interrupt a student’s learning. The loss of class time means a student is missing daily teacher-led instruction, class discussions, demonstrations, experiments and participation activities that enhance the learning process. Completing missed work independently means missing out on teacher guided lessons. Absent students may also miss important concepts taught on the missed day that are then used as a foundation for following lessons. Learning is a progressive activity.

That’s why Sherman ISD launched PASS, an incentive program designed to encourage students to attend school every day. The PASS Program helps emphasis to students and parents the benefits of developing positive school attendance habits.

Participation in the PASS Program is simple. Students are automatically included in the program just by attending class every day. The incentive program will award grand prizes through a drawing process. Students in preK-4 grade with perfect attendance have an opportunity to win a new bike and students in 5-12 grade with perfect attendance have an opportunity to win a new Kindle Fire. Eligibility to win begins with having perfect attendance January 8 through May 18. Students who don’t miss any class during the program dates will be automatically entered for the grand prize drawings at each school.
