What are the school start/end times?

Sherman ISD schools have staggered start times between Pre-K/Elementary and Middle/High School.  The start times are as follows:

    1. Pre-K/Elementary starts at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. and
    2. Middle/High School starts at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 3:55 p.m.

How many instructional days are required in the academic calendar?

Sherman ISD must operate so that it provides 75,600 minutes of instruction, including intermissions and recesses for students. That equates to 168 instruction days for students for the 2022-2023 academic calendar. Sherman ISD must also adhere to 187 contract days for teaching staff.

What happens on early release days?

Early release days provide many benefits to our district. These days allow for teachers to input grades, finalize final exams or semester grades, and allow teaching colleagues to work together toward a common goal that’s important to their particular subject or campus.

Why are there professional development exchange days on the calendar?

The calendar committee agreed to afford staff additional days off during this calendar, due to many of the required training staff must complete. Many times, professional learning days occur outside the regular contract/calendar, and these days are in exchange for the time staff attends mandatory training that falls within those parameters.

What is the purpose of professional development and/or teacher workdays?

The purpose of staff development days is to strengthen educators’ performance levels so that they can enhance their performance and raise student achievement. Our calendar committee proposed to frontload some of our staff development and teacher workdays at the beginning of the school year to allow our teachers to complete state-required professional development and provide time for teachers to work in their classrooms to get ready for the new school  year.

Why are all staff required to attend campus professional development on August 4, 2022?

Campus principals will lead their entire staff in professional learning to enhance and develop campus culture, review campus goals and allow time for team building activities. This day will be in exchange for February 20, 2023. Staff who miss this day will be required to attend professional learning off contract hours on other days arranged with the campus principal.

Do bad weather days affect the calendar?

Our current calendar has a minimum of three days allotted for bad weather. In the event there is inclement weather causing school closure, Sherman ISD will utilize the designated days in the order of March 10, April 11 or March 20. In the event more days are needed, Sherman ISD will adjust the calendar to allow for additional inclement weather days as needed. Any change to the finalized academic calendar will be communicated from the district level to all campuses promptly.

Can Sherman ISD change or update the academic calendar after its approval or the start of the school year?

Sherman ISD can update or change the academic calendar at any time to adhere to any academic calendar changes made by the Texas Education Agency. The district also has the option to add minutes to days remaining in the school year to make up for an unplanned event that may cause the school to close during the school year.
