Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support is a framework for targeting an individual student's needs in academic, behavioral, and social-emotional areas. Campuses at all levels implement this framework to close achievement gaps and address the needs of all students. The main goal of this approach is to monitor student progress and provide early intervention support.
Students are usually screened three times a year to identify those in need of intervention, and progress is monitored through the use of tools and processes to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction, interventions and support. Decisions about instruction, interventions and implementation are based on data gathered and made through meetings of teams of teachers and support staff.
The tiers of support include:
Tier 1 - Universal support
High-quality instruction and behavioral support provided to all students in the general education setting.
Tier 2 - Targeted support
Additional, more focused interventions for students who need more help than what Tier 1 provides.
Tier 3 - Intensive support
Individualized support for students with significant difficulties, often requiring specialized interventions.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
PBIS is used in Sherman ISD as part of the MTSS framework to support the behavioral and social-emotional needs of all students. This proactive approach to improving school climate is designed to encourage positive behaviors and create safe, supportive environments where students can succeed academically and socially.
At the Tier 1 level, PBIS provides universal supports for all students. This includes teaching clear behavioral expectations, recognizing and rewarding positive behaviors, and using consistent consequences for misbehavior. For instance, schools may display school rules in classrooms, hallways and other common areas. Many schools also use rewards systems, such as points or tickets that students can earn for good behavior and redeem for privileges or prizes, to motivate and sustain positive choices.
