Dyslexia Services
All students in kindergarten and first grade are screened to see if they are risk for dyslexia, and at-risk students are given a full evaluation. Students in seventh grade who failed the sixth grade reading STAAR and have not been evaluated will be screened for dyslexia or other reading disorders. Parents of at-risk students will be notified, and a dyslexia evaluation may be requested by a parent at any time.
Sherman ISD offers dyslexia services on all campuses to all students who meet eligibility criteria. Students with dyslexia will be served by a trained teacher with a program that includes evidence-based components of phonological awareness, sound-symbol association, syllabication, orthography, morphology, syntax, reading comprehension and fluency. Students with dyslexia will also be given appropriate instructional accommodations in order to be successful throughout their academic career.
