Required Screenings
Texas schools are required to conduct specific health screenings to ensure the well-being of students. These screenings are mandated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and are conducted in varying grade levels.
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Purpose: To identify students who may have vision or hearing problems that could affect learning
Spinal Screenings
Purpose: To detect abnormal spinal curvature, such as scoliosis. Parents may request an exemption for religious reasons or if the screening has already been conducted by a healthcare professional.
Acanthosis Nigricans Screenings
Purpose: Acanthosis nigricans is a marker for potential risk of Type 2 diabetes. Screeners look for dark, thickened patches of skin, typically around the neck.
