Counseling

School counselors are essential to ensuring not only a student's school and career success, but also their emotional and mental development and well-being. Counselors work closely with staff, students, parents and the community to plan and implement a counseling and guidance program. Their efforts are intended to be proactive, rather than reactive, in nature.
The Sherman ISD Counseling Program is built upon the four components of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling.
- Guidance Curriculum (school-wide activities, character education lessons)
- Individual Planning (academic advising, course selection, post-secondary planning)
- Responsive Services (individual or small-group counseling, crisis response)
- System Support (planning, evaluation)
The purpose of the program is to impart skills and knowledge that will enable Sherman ISD students to be successful at school, home and in their future. Specific examples of counseling services provided in SISD include:
- Setting academic goals and creating academic plans
- Checking in about emotions, challenges, or concerns
- Learning coping strategies and managing stress
- Addressing school-related issues (i.e. attendance, behavior, peer conflict)
- Building friendship and conflict resolution skills
- Participating in short-term individual sessions on school-related topics
Notice and Consent for Health-Related Services
Under Senate Bill 12, passed by the 89th Legislature in 2025, parents may opt their child out of any health-related service offered in Sherman ISD. Consent is assumed if you do not opt out. If you would like to decline health-related services for your child, log on to the district's online registration form and update your child's information under the Restrictions section at any time during the school year. See detailed instructions in English or Spanish. Please also notify your child's school, and staff will be in touch with you for further information.
