Ways to Support Your Child

Sherman ISD recognizes the critical role families play in preparing students for success during middle and high school and beyond.

Your involvement helps guide your child through these important years as they explore their interests, set goals and plan for the future. Here are key ways you can support your student at home:

Stay Informed About Programs and Opportunities

  • Understand course options: Learn about classes, such as dual credit, advanced academics, or career and technical education (CTE) programs, offered in Sherman ISD.
  • Explore extracurriculars: Encourage participation in clubs or activities that align with your child’s interests and aspirations.
  • Plan for the future: Attend college and career nights, information sessions, and school events that provide guidance on opportunities for students.

Guide Course Selection and Academic Planning

  • Help set goals: Work with your child to establish short- and long-term academic and career objectives.
  • Review course schedules: Collaborate with your child and their school counselor to ensure your child’s courses align with their goals and graduation requirements.
  • Track progress: Use the Parent Portal to stay updated on your student’s grades and assignments.

Support Daily Learning Habits

  • Encourage attendance: Ensure your child is in school every day, ready to learn, and on time. Consistent attendance is vital for academic success. Attendance can also be reviewed in the Parent Portal.
  • Foster a productive routine: Help your child establish a daily schedule that includes time for homework, studying, and extracurricular activities.
  • Create a study-friendly environment: Designate a quiet, well-organized space for schoolwork, free from distractions.

Connect with Teachers and Staff

  • Build relationships: Regularly communicate with your child’s teachers, counselors, and administrators to stay informed about their progress and needs.
  • Ask questions: Don’t hesitate to seek advice or clarification about coursework, programs, or school policies.
  • Attend events: School activities are excellent opportunities to collaborate and stay involved.

Promote College and Career Readiness

  • Prepare for college entrance exams: Utilize free or low-cost resources like SAT and ACT prep guides, practice tests, and online workshops.
  • Explore future options: Discuss colleges, universities, trade schools, or military service as potential paths. Take time to research and visit campuses or career sites.
  • Support internships and job shadowing: Help your child gain real-world experience through internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities.

Foster Healthy Habits and Life Skills

  • Encourage balance: Promote a healthy mix of schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and downtime to prevent burnout.
  • Model good habits: Demonstrate effective time management, goal setting, and perseverance in your own life.
  • Teach responsibility: Involve your student in managing their schedule, meeting deadlines, and making decisions.

Celebrate Growth and Success

  • Acknowledge effort: Praise your child for their hard work, even if results don’t always meet expectations.
  • Focus on progress: Highlight how far they’ve come, not just where they need to go.
  • Celebrate milestones: Recognize academic achievements, personal growth, and other significant accomplishments.

Leverage School and Community Resources

  • Get involved: Join parent organizations and attend school events to learn what’s available and show your support.
  • Seek help when needed: Don’t hesitate to reach out to school staff or community programs if your child faces challenges.
By staying engaged, fostering strong habits, and partnering with teachers and staff, families can help middle or high school students build a foundation for lifelong success.
