Elementary Education

Elementary campuses in Sherman ISD serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Our educators are shaping these young learners to be the next generation of leaders by meeting their individual academic, emotional and social needs and equipping them to excel in a changing environment.
Measuring Student Progress
Sherman ISD teachers are constantly monitoring student learning and differentiating instruction within the classroom to respond to student needs. This can take the form of quick checks for understanding or more formal tests or projects at the end of an instructional unit. Report cards for grades 3-5 consist of both formative grades, which are earned during a unit to identify student strengths and weaknesses, as well as summative grades, which are earned at the end of a unit to evaluate student learning.
SISD Course Plan Documents
Sherman ISD teaches the state standards outlined in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). These standards detail what students should know and be able to do by grade level and subject. SISD curriculum documents can be found in the SISD Teaching & Learning Parent Portal and contain the order in which the TEKS are generally covered. Numbers and letters reference specific TEKS which are outlined in detail on the state TEKS website.
Testing Dates & Information
Elementary students take STAAR and TELPAS tests, as well as i-Ready assessments in reading and math, to measure growth throughout the school year. i-Ready provides personalized student learning and helps teachers identify individual student academic needs as well as areas for whole class review.
Families are encouraged to review scores to gain a picture of their child’s learning and progress.
