Bilingual Program

Our bilingual program is designed to make grade-level academic content accessible to Emergent Bilingual students through the development of literacy and academic skills in students’ primary/partner language and English.

Sherman ISD currently serves students in our bilingual program whose primary/partner language is Spanish at select campuses. Teachers are fluent in both English and Spanish and are specially trained in second language acquisition methods and how to adapt instruction to meet the needs of each student.

Students in the bilingual program receive instruction in literacy and academic content in both English and Spanish. Our youngest bilingual students in Pre-Kindergarten receive 90% of their instruction in Spanish and 10% in English. As they get older, the amount of instruction they receive in English increases, until they are receiving half of their instruction in English and half in Spanish in fourth and fifth grades. Students continuing to need English language support transition to our ESL program in middle school.

Bilingual students develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English through the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) in conjunction with grade-level academic instruction in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for all content areas, including language arts, math, science, and social studies. Instruction is designed to consider students’ unique learning experiences, instill a positive identity, and honor the culture and experiences of students in the program.

Help at Home

Parents can support their child’s acquisition of English through opportunities to practice English as well as opportunities to increase their child’s skills in their primary language. Research shows the benefits of primary language development on second language development and the positive transfer of skills from one language to another. You can help support your child’s English acquisition by:

  • reading to your child in English and/or your primary language
  • engaging in conversations that promote a wide-range of vocabulary in either language
  • oral storytelling in your primary language and/or English
