New Multipurpose Stadium
Sherman ISD's new multipurpose stadium will open in September 2026, three years sooner than the 2029 opening shared with voters prior to the 2023 bond election.
The new, five-story stadium provides seating for approximately 8,000 spectators and will serve students involved in football, soccer, track and field, band, cheer, Hi-Steppers and broadcast/AV/journalism CTE programs, as well as other extra- and co-curricular activities.
Construction on the site, which leverages the previously existing athletic field, track, field house, concessions and infrastructure at Sherman High School's Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex, began in early 2025. Historic Bearcat Stadium will continue to serve the community as the City of Sherman grows and the school district expands.
The new stadium features improved accessibility, security, parking, concessions, restrooms, a press box and video score board. The venue's first varsity football game will be September 18, 2026 against The Colony High School.
Stadium Features
- 5,000 home-side seats, including 1,700 chair-back seats, and 3,000 visitor-side seats with great views of playing and running surfaces
- Home stands on west side of facility will shade most fans from direct sun during evening events as the sun sets
- 4 new concession stands and 1 existing for a total of 3 home side and 2 visitor side locations
- Visitor locker rooms flexible for large teams up to 100 athletes, can be divided to serve two teams of 50
- Approximately 900 new parking spaces to serve the stadium and high school
- Improves security, handicap and wheelchair accessibility including wheelchair-accessible design for press box, and multiple seating tiers and locations on both home and visitor side
- Eliminates the need for busing and students driving to Bearcat Stadium

Grand Opening Events
Members of the public will get the opportunity to see the stadium before the home opener during a community open house tentatively set for Saturday, September 12, 2026. The first varsity football game in the new stadium will be held on Friday, September 18 versus The Colony High School.
Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex
In 2021, before the stadium project was approved by voters as part of the 2023 bond election, the Sherman ISD Board of Trustees formally named athletic facilities at Sherman High School for individuals who led some of Sherman’s most successful football teams.
- The athletic complex that includes the stadium was named for Tommy Hudspeth, who worked as a teacher, coach and administrator in Sherman ISD for 25 years and led the Bearcat football team to 25 wins from 1975-77 without a loss.
- The track that surrounds the field was named for Ed Hunt, a teacher and football and track coach who led the Fred Douglass Panthers to the Class 2A state football championship in 1964 with a perfect 12-0 record.
- The stadium itself does not have a separate name, and Sherman ISD will refer to games played at the Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex.
