Procedure for Naming Facilities

The Board of Trustees has established a process for naming facilities in local board policy. The policy states that the Board shall consider naming a facility or a portion of a facility for a person, historic event or place, geographic location, or major donor who meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • The person has made or is making significant contributions to the District and represents virtues or characteristics that serve as a role model to students, staff, and the community.
  • The person has made or is making significant contributions to public education and has a significant connection to the District as a student, an alumnus, a staff member, an administrator, a donor, or a supporter.
  • The person has made substantial contributions to his or her field of endeavor or to society in general.
  • A name may be reused for facility naming purposes in the event a facility is consolidated or demolished.
  • A facility named for an historic event shall have major significance to the District, geographic area, state of Texas, or our nation.
  • Extensive research shall be conducted on a proposed honoree before a final decision is made regarding naming a facility or portion of a facility for a person.

The policy establishes a time frame from January to March each year to make determinations for the names of school facilities.

BOARD POLICY FOR NAMING FACILITIES

Nomination Process

Sherman ISD is currently accepting nominations for the names of current and future facilities. While community members may submit nominations for a facility name at any time, nominations must be received by January 24, 2025 in order to be considered for the new elementary school opening for the 2025-26 school year. Nominations must be made with all required documentation.

A district committee will review any nominations received and present them for consideration to the School Board, in accordance with Board policy. Any nomination accepted by the Board and not selected for the new elementary school will remain on the list of accepted potential names and could be used for future projects.
