#### Newly Introduced Vocabulary – Multiplication and Division

• Multiplication Combing equal groups repeatedly, also known as repeated addition. 4 x 5 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 The symbol ‘x’ stands for ‘groups of’. Factor The numbers you are multiplying in your equation. 6   X   9 Factor   X   Factor Product The answer to your multiplication equation. 6 x 9 = 54 Factor   X   Factor = Product Array A model that is used to represent multiplication equations. In this case the symbol ‘x’ stands for ‘rows of’. 3 X 4 = 12 In this case the symbol ‘x’ stands for ‘rows of’. Associative Property You can multipy regardless of how the numbers are grouped. ‘Grouped’  means 'how you use parenthesis' (7 x 9) x 4 = 7 x (9 x 4) Commutative Property You can change the order of the numbers you are multiplying, and it will not change the product. 6 x 5 = 5 x 6 Division The action of separating something into equal parts or the process of being separated into equal groups. 50 ÷ 5 = 10 ‘50 people ÷ into 5 groups = 10 in each group’ Dividend The number that is being separated into equal groups. 50 ÷ 5 = 10 Divisor The number you are diving by, the number of equal groups. 50 ÷ 5 = 10 Quotient The answer to a division equation. 50 ÷ 5 = 10
