    Multiplication

    Combing equal groups repeatedly, also known as repeated addition.

    4 x 5 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5

    The symbol ‘x’ stands for ‘groups of’.

     

    Factor

    The numbers you are multiplying in your equation.

    6   X   9

    Factor   X   Factor

     

    Product

    The answer to your multiplication equation.

    6 x 9 = 54

    Factor   X   Factor = Product

     

    Array 

    A model that is used to represent multiplication equations. In this case the symbol ‘x’ stands for ‘rows of’.

                        Array        3 X 4 = 12

    In this case the symbol ‘x’ stands for ‘rows of’.

     

    Associative Property

    You can multipy regardless of how the numbers are grouped. ‘Grouped’  means 'how you use parenthesis'

     

    (7 x 9) x 4 = 7 x (9 x 4)

    Commutative Property

     You can change the order of the numbers you are multiplying, and it will not change the product.

     

    6 x 5 = 5 x 6

     

    Division

     

    The action of separating something into equal parts or the process of being separated into equal groups.

    50 ÷ 5 = 10

    50 people ÷ into 5 groups = 10 in each group’

     

    Dividend

     The number that is being separated into equal groups.

     

    50 ÷ 5 = 10

     

    Divisor 

     The number you are diving by, the number of equal groups.

     

    50 ÷ 5 = 10

     

    Quotient

     The answer to a division equation.

     

    50 ÷ 5 = 10
