    Expanded Notation

    A way of writing a number to show the value of each digit. This is shown as a sum of each digit multiplied by its matching place value.

     

    4,356 in expanded form is:

    (4x1,000)+(3x100)+(5x10)+(6x1)

    Ten Thousands

    The place of a number that is five digits to the left of the decimal.

     

    10,000.

    Hundred Thousands 

    The place of a number that is six digits to the left of the decimal.

     

    100,000.

    Round

    Alter a number to be less exact but more convenient for calculations.

     

    123 rounds down to 100

    156 rounds up to  200

    Halfway

    The base ten rule means that any number with the digit 5 is halfway to the next base 10 number. This rule is also how students determine if a number rounds up or down.

     

    5 is halfway to 10

    500 is halfway to 1,000
