TEA Legal Frameworkds
The purpose of the project is to provide and maintain an updated web-based platform to assist stakeholders such as local educational agencies (LEAs), advocates, and parents in learning about state and federal laws and regulations by providing rich resources regarding obligations and rights for the provision of a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment to students with disabilities.

The Special Education Information Center (SPEDTex) provides resources and interactive features for increasing family awareness of disabilities and special education processes, with the goal of improving partnerships between schools and families.

SB 139 Special Education Referral Process
To begin the special education referral process for your child, submit a written request for evaluation. This can be done by sending an email or hard copy of the request to the campus principal at your child’s school. If your child is too young to enroll in school the request can be sent to the principal at the early childhood campuses (Fred Douglas or Perrin Early Childhood Centers) or the district Child Find contact, Andrea Kennedy ankennedy@shermanisd.net at Central Office, 2701 Loy Lake Rd, Sherman TX, 75090. In your request, please include what specific concerns you have regarding your child, and the areas of functioning you are requesting evaluation in (for example, math, reading, behavior, communication, etc…). Compensatory Services
Families can request compensatory services if their child was previously denied a Full Individual and Initial Evaluation (FIIE) in cases where such evaluation would have been appropriate or whose FIIE was delayed. To inquire about these services families in special education should request an ARD meeting to discuss Compensatory Services. For students not currently in special education, put your concerns in writing and send them to the administrator of your child’s campus. Please see the linked flyers for more information about denied or delayed evaluations:

Texas Transition Services and Employment Guide
Transition Services refers to a coordinated set of activities for a student with a disability, designed within an outcome-oriented process, which promotes movement from school to post-school activities including, but not limited to:
- Post-Secondary Education
- Vocational Assessment and/or Training
- Integrated Competitive Employment (including supported employment)
- College/Adult Education Support Services
- Work and Volunteer Experience
- Independent Living Skills
- Linkage to Community Agencies
