Mrs. Mitchell has served as a Director of Bands in SISD since 2015. The first six years were at Piner before being allowed the opportunity to open the Sherman MS Band program. This year she will lead the SMS Honors Band as well as the beginning Tuba/Euphonium, Trombone, Clarinet and Horn classes. She will also assist Miss Hilliard with Symphonic Band. Before coming to SISD, Mrs. Mitchell was a head director in Plano ISD for 16 years. During that time, she learned to teach and play every band instrument.

Mrs. Mitchell grew up playing tuba in New Mexico. She chose to come to Texas to study with Dr. Gary Garner at West Texas A&M. Once arriving in Texas and seeing how respected and supported music programs were, she knew she had to stay. After taking some time building her teaching experience, she attended Southern Methodist University to earn her Masters in Music Education, where she had the privilege to study with Lynne Jackson, Brian Merrill and Dr. Sarah Allen.

The Mitchell Family is happy to call Sherman home. Mr. Mitchell also works for SISD and their son Caleb is a proud Husky. 

Miss Hilliard will be starting her first year of teaching with us at SMS. She was the Student Teacher in the spring of 2022, so we are extremely happy to keep her and she is thrilled to get to work with the awesome students she got to know last year.

Miss Hilliard attended Southeastern Oklahoma University where she was an outstanding flute player and was also the Drum Major of the Spirit of Southeastern Marching Band. Miss Hilliard earned many recognitions before attending SOSU. Two of the highlights were being Drum Major of the Sanger HS Band and making the Texas All State Band playing the flute.

When not at work, you will likely find Miss Hilliard hanging out with her sweet kitty cat or checking in on her family.
