Pre-K, Early Head Start, and Head Start Important Information
Sherman ISD offers three options for early childhood education depending on the student’s age and needs. All programs are available for free to those residing in Sherman ISD who meet age and eligibility requirements.
A child must qualify to be in the Pre-Kindergarten, Early Head Start, or Head Start Program. Completion of the application does not qualify a student for the program.
The Pre-Kindergarten, Early Head Start, and Head Start application process is online.
Families will need to provide proof of eligibility to complete the application process. Please see eligibility requirements and required application documents listed by the program below.
Pre-Kindergarten Eligibility Requirements
Pre-Kindergarten is a one-year, full-day program in which students receive high-quality instruction to prepare them for success in Kindergarten and beyond. Transportation is provided if the student lives more than two miles from campus.
To qualify, the child must live in Sherman ISD, be four-years-old on or before September 1, 2024, and meet one or more of the following:
- Family is income eligible (Medicaid, EBT)
- Family is homeless
- Child is in foster care
- Child is a dependent of active-duty military
- Child speaks no or limited English (Child will be tested to see if they qualify by language)
- Parent/Guardian is Star of Texas Award recipient
You will need to bring the following documentation to register:
- Parent Photo ID
- Proof of income for everyone in the household (Four most recent paycheck stubs or 2023 1040 tax return transcript showing gross income with preparer's signature)
- Proof of address (Lease agreement or gas, water or electric bill)
- W-2
- SNAP/TANF will need the EDG #
- Medicaid card
- Child shot records
- Child birth certificate
- Verification of Military ID
- DFPS verification letter or other DFPS official documentation
- Star of Texas Award documentation

Early Head Start Eligibility Requirements
The Region 10 Early Head Start program is a comprehensive, federal educational program for pregnant women, teen parents, and families with infants and toddlers. In Early Head Start, families can consider a more flexible program through Home-Based Early Childhood Education.
To qualify, the child must live in Sherman ISD and meet one or more of the following:
- You may be pregnant
- Your child must be an infant (birth) or a toddler up to the age of 34 months old
- You must be income-eligible (SNAP, SSI, TANF)
- Family is homeless
- Child is in foster care
- Child is receiving disability services
Additional services provided by Region 10:
- Family goal-setting
- Parent leadership and learning opportunities
- Developmental screenings
- Medical, dental and mental health support for children
- Special services for children with disabilities
- Support services for the whole family
You will need to bring the following documentation to register:
- Parent Photo ID

Head Start Eligibility Requirements
