Regular Board Meeting
Tuesday, October 21, 2003

Board Members Present: John Blystone, Mae Burton, Cathy Renshaw, Betty Stoker, Al Zorrilla

Board Members Absent: David Kennedy

* David Parker invited everyone to attend Colonial Days at Dillingham on October 22 and 23.

* CATE Director Bill Berghauser presented a report on the SHS career and technology department. Mr. Berghauser also showed the 12-minute video that is used as a recruitment tool for the career and technology department.

* Superintendent/Board Dialogue -

  • Dillingham principal Clif Cotton, assistant principal Wendy Russell, and 3 students that attended Camp Rio Roxo (Dakota Gourd, Jeremy Pimm and Jerica Ferguson) reported on the activities and the hands-on curriculum at the camp.  
  • SHS principal Dr. Buck Gilcrease announced the National Merit Scholars competition results. Dr. Gilcrease recognized the SHS finalists and their parents. Jerrod Hill and Bradley Petty were named National Achievement Scholarship finalists. Meredith Brownlee, Matt Ditzler and Jordan McKnight were named as commended scholars and Spencer Green was named as a semi-finalist.
  • Director of maintenance Chuck Edwards reported on the hail-damaged roofs and a/c units in the district. He also reported that the Piner security cameras installation was complete and the cameras were in use. Mr. Edwards told the Board that the problem of noisy a/c units in the portables was in the process of being solved. 
  • Director of special education Victoria Hubbard presented a report on the massive immunization program that had taken place in the district September 25, 26, 29 and October 1. Ms. Hubbard reported that 3,847 immunizations had been given over the 4-day period. 
  • Superintendent Dr. Rodney Hutto made an appeal for the noon Rotary’s Koats for Kids program. He urged everyone to donate used or new coats for needy kids and adults. Dr. Hutto also reported that the Sherman Police Dept. was in need of a drug dog and the police dept. was requesting donations to help with the $8,000 that was needed to purchase a drug dog.

* On behalf of the Sherman I.S.D., the Board accepted gifts totaling $12,792 to Sherman High School, Crutchfield, Fred Douglass, Jefferson and Wakefield Elementary Schools.

* The Board approved the Annual Investment Report.

* The Board approved Dr. Rodney Hutto, Dr. Al Hambrick, Bruce Barnett and Joe McCullough as investment officers for the SISD.

* The Board approved the participation agreement with TexPool Prime.

* The Board approved the board president and assistant superintendent of finance as authorized check signers.

* The Board approved various budget amendments in the General Operating, Food Service and Debt Service Funds. 

* The Board approved expenditures for the month of September in the amount of $3,288,290.59.

* The Board approved the proposal from Roof Technical Services, Inc. to provide the architectural/engineering services for design and construction administration for the replacement of roof systems in the district due to the hailstorm in April 2003.

* The Board approved by consent agenda the following items:

  • Resolution to Sanction 4-H Organization as an Extracurricular Activity
  • Memorandum of Understanding with the Sherman Housing Authority
  • Applying for 21st Century Grant
  • Textbook Committee Members

* The Board approved probationary contracts for two teachers.

* The Board meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
