* A public
hearing was held and Asst. Superintendent Bruce Barnett presented a report on the
financial accountability rating for 2001-02 (Schools FIRST) and reported that the District
had received a superior rating. This rating is the highest available and is based on
financial, student, budgetary and actual general ledger data. It is the goal of the TEA to
improve the management of school district finances. The public hearing closed and the
Board reconvened in open session at 7:22 p.m.

Superintendent/Board Dialogue -
- Dr. Sandi Froese and Keith Lightfoot
reported on the Sherman Education Foundations very successful fall fundraiser with
Major Saver, Inc. Mr. Duffy Johnson of Major Saver, Inc. presented a check in the amount
of $12,850 to the Sherman Education Foundation. The SEF shared their proceeds from the
fundraiser and presented checks to Perrin, Wakefield, Washington, Dillingham, Piner and
Douglass for a total of $6,425.
- SHS principal Buck Gilcrease recognized
Joe Frank and the Sherman High School Band and congratulated the band for being rated 6th
in the state in the 4-A division.
- SHS principal Buck Gilcrease recognized
the SHS girls volleyball team and their coach, Malina Bernard and congratulated the
team on being named regional semi-finalists.
- SHS principal Buck Gilcrease presented
a report on the Sherman High School Advanced Placement Program.
* On behalf
of the Sherman I.S.D., the Board accepted gifts totaling $3,470.00 to Sherman High School,
Piner Middle School, and Fairview Elementary School.
* The Board
accepted a check for $6,425 from the Sherman Education Foundations fall fundraiser
with Major Saver, Inc. to be used for resources at various campuses. Perrin received $960;
Wakefield received $1,615;
Washington
received $860; Dillingham received $1,790; Piner received $1,152.50; and the DLC received
$47.50.
* The Board
cast 834 votes for Al Zorrilla and 534 votes for L. D. Byrd to elect them to the Grayson
Appraisal District Board of Directors.
* The Board
approved the 2003-04 District Improvement Plan.
* The Board
tabled the agenda item that dealt with joining the Alvarado Intervenors to file suit
against the State of Texas to provide adequate school funding.
* The Board
approved various budget amendments in the General Operating, Food Service and Debt Service
Funds.
* The Board
approved expenditures for the month of October in the amount of $3,954,022.05.
* By consent
agenda, the Board approved the following items:
- Awarded band instrument bids to Brook
Mays Music Company in the amount of $20,663.00.
- Designated Bruce Barnett as the primary
authorized representative with the Texas Dept. of Agriculture to act for the District in
all matters pertaining to the Child Nutrition Program.
* The Board
acknowledged the superintendents acceptance of a teacher resignation and two teacher
resignations for retirement.
* The Board
approved a probationary contract for a kindergarten teacher at Wakefield Elementary.
