Regular Board Meeting

Board Members Present: Randy Fluke, Donald Johnston, David Kennedy, Cary McDougal,
Cathy Renshaw, Betty Stoker, Al Zorrilla
Board Members Absent: None
* Two advanced technology Piner Middle School students, Spencer Oestreich and R. C. Slagle
prepared a Power Point presentation on the various activities at Piner.
* Assistant Superintendent Dr. Fred Freeman presented the 2000-01 Academic Excellence
Indicator System (AEIS) report.
* Assistant Superintendent Dr. Fred Freeman presented a summary of curriculum alignment
efforts in the SISD. The report was in response to a request from the Board at the October
2001 meeting.
* Chuck Edwards, Director of Maintenance, updated the Board on the status of various
maintenance and custodial projects. Mr. Edwards also presented an electric deregulation
status report.
* SHS Principal Dr. Al Hambrick recognized former and current SHS AP students and
congratulated them on the results of the College Board Advanced Placement Tests. Dr.
Hambrick told the Board 31 students received AP Scholar Recognition from the College
Board.
* Director of Finance Bruce Barnett discussed the SHS auditorium sound system and
electrical proposals and told the Board that as a result of a law change in the Texas
Education Code, the administration recommended rescinding all proposals on the audio and
electrical systems at SHS.
* On behalf of Sherman Independent School District, the Board accepted the following
gifts:
SISD
Cable One of Sherman - $400 and school supplies
Sherman High School
Bob Utter Ford of Sherman - $150 to the SHS Engineering Team
RGB Eye Associates, P.A. of Sherman - $100 - SHS Engineering Team
American Bank of Texas of Sherman - $150 - SHS Engineering Team
Crutchfield Elementary School
Crutchfield PTA - $5,312 for the purchase of eight scanners that will be used in third and
fourth grade classrooms. The cost of each scanner is $664.
Fairview Elementary School
Thirty (30) $50 donations from local businesses supporting Fairview's efforts to refurbish
the cafeteria - Total amount of gifts - $1,500
Jefferson Elementary School
Oliver Dewey Mayor Foundation of Sherman - $12,000 to be used for the purchase of the
Accelerated Math Program
Wakefield Elementary School
The Dr. Dale Davies Family of Sherman - $500 to be used for the Koalaty Kid program.
Wilson N. Jones Regional Health System of Sherman - $1,000 to be used for the Koalaty Kid
program
The Dr. Thomas McGovern Family of Sherman - $500 to be used for the Koalaty Kid program.
Fred Douglass School
Breco Wood Products of Sherman - $185 to be used to purchase t-shirts for Mrs. Estes' Head
Start Class
*The Board approved several budget amendments.
* The Board approved expenditures for the month of October in the amount of $3,237,076.09.
* The Board approved remaining with CIGNA as the third -party administrator and ING
ReliaStar as the stop-loss provider for calendar year 2002. The Board also approved
various changes to the health insurance plan as follows:
>Monthly health insurance premiums increased to $251 for
employee coverage under PPO Option One, PPO Option two, and HMO.
>Increase of monthly health insurance premiums for dependents.
>Employees will pay $30 per month for Option Two (in addition
to monthly dependent premiums). Employees will not pay a monthly charge (in
addition to monthly dependent premiums) for participating in Option
One, HMO, or the hospital benefits only policy for those employees covered by a spouse's
insurance.
>The CIGNA HMO Plan will be added as an option.
* The Board approved accepting an additional pipeline easement of approximately 200 feet
on the SHS property with Dynegy Midstream Services, Limited Partnership.
* Based on the state's AEIS indicators the Board approved that performance award funds be
transferred from the General Fund to the following campus budgets.
Perrin Elementary School - Exemplary Performance - $10,000
Wakefield Elementary School - Exemplary Performance - $10,000
Crutchfield Elementary School - Recognized Performance - $5,000
Fairview Elementary School - Recognized Performance - $5,000
Jefferson Elementary School - Recognized Performance - $5,000
Piner Middle School - Recognized Performance - $5,000
* Certificates were given to the two exemplary and four recognized schools for their
outstanding academic performance during the 2000-01 school year.
* The Board adopted the TEA-required administrative updates and corrections to the
District Improvement Plan.
* The Board approved rescinding all proposals for the audio system and electrical system
for the Sherman High School Auditorium
* The Board approved rescinding all bids (due to exceeding the allocated budget) for the
Life Skills Center at the Old Dillingham Building.
* The Board authorized proceeding with pricing and procurement of the sound system and
electrical work for the Sherman High School Auditorium.
* The Board approved by consent agenda the following items:
>Acceptance of Grants
>District-wide Early Release Dates for TAKS Training (February
22, March 28, April 26, and May 3)
>Approval of Textbook Adoption Committee Members
* The Board approved acceptance of the following teacher resignation for retirement.
>Rathalia Hunt - Kindergarten - Jefferson Elementary
