* Keith
Porter addressed the Board with concerns regarding the selection of Director of Bands. He
urged the Board to choose carefully and not rush when selecting someone to replace Joe
Franks.

Superintendent/Board Dialogue:
- SHS UIL coach Karen Foster recognized
the UIL academic teams at Sherman High School and said she would be taking 20 students to
Denton for competition on Saturday, April 24th.
- Dr. Hutto presented a Title I, Part A
Distinguished Performance Award to Fairview Elementary principal Thomas ONeal.
- Sharla Mullins (5th grade
coach) and Jamie Harvey (6th grade coach) introduced the Dillingham Future
Problem Solvers. Ms. Mullins told the Board that the 5th grade had won the
state category for its project of
raising funds to help the Sherman
Police Department purchase a drug dog. The 5th grade presented a check to the
SPD in the amount of approximately $5,400.
- Piner Middle School principal Mike
Mitchusson introduced Caleb Cosper, Melanie Littlefield, Matthew Frazier and Emma
Whitfield as the Piner 7th grade Duke Talent winners.
* On behalf
of the Sherman I.S.D., the Board accepted gifts in the amount of $4,900 to be used for
Special Olympics, Crutchfield special education students and to supplement
Wakefields challenge program.
* The Board
approved expenditures for the month of March in the amount of $3,966,870.97.
* The Board
approved various budget amendments in the General Operating, Food Service and Debt Service
Funds.
* The Board
approved changes to the 2004 summer school plan. The major changes are as follows:
- Supplemental funding for Optional
Extended Year Program (OEYP) with Title I, State Compensatory Education, and Accelerated
Reading and Math Initiative funds.
- Tuition charges of $100/course at Piner
and increased tuition charges of $150/course for SISD residents and $200/course for
out-of-district students.
- A shortened week, but longer day at SHS
for students and staff. Each session will have a four-day week for 12 days from 7 a.m.
until 3 p.m.
- Added classes for students new to the
US for a bilingual education program in grades Pre-K 4 at Washington Elementary.
- Implementation of summer lunch program
at Washington Elementary for economically disadvantaged students.
* The Board
acknowledged the superintendents acceptance of teachers resignations.
* The Board
acknowledged the superintendents acceptance of teachers resignations for
retirement.
* The Board
acknowledged the superintendents acceptance of Director of Human Resources
Resignation.
* The Board
approved contracts for teachers.
* The Board
approved a new probationary contract for the 2004-05 school year for Jeffrey D. Bradford
as Director of Bands.
* The Board
took no action on a parent and student complaint about the participation of the student in
high school graduation ceremonies.
* The Board
meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
