Sherman ISD Supplementary Vision Services
SISD Administrative Annex (903) 891-6439
Sherman ISD provides VI services for students that qualify. It is our goal to help
children from birth to 21 years of age to become independent, productive citizens through
education.
Visual impairments range in severity from very mild (but still below
typical visual abilities - worse than 20/70) to no vision. A child may acquire a
visual impairment at birth or at any point throughout his or her life, with each situation
having a different impact on development. Visual impairments can and do happen in
conjunction with all levels of physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities. These
factors combine to make the population of children with visual impairments an extremely
heterogeneous group.
Vision services within the school district are determined based on a
student's educational needs. It is our goal for every student to be able to function
visually to the degree that they receive their free and appropriate public education
(FAPE). If they do not have a functional degree of vision, it is our goal to teach
them skills to access information using alternative methods and adapted technology.
