Every school year,
school districts destroy confidential special education student folders. Records that will
be shredded are for students who graduated, dismissed from, or last attended Sherman ISD
in May of 2001. Adult students, eighteen years of age or older, or parents of students
under eighteen, may request to have their files. To process a request or ask questions,
please contact Charrie Waters at 903-891-6439. The deadline to request records is August
1, 2008.

Inclement Weather Information
There are two
"bad weather days" built into the 2007-2008 school calendar. When winter weather
conditions strike, the superintendent, after consulting with other designated persons,
makes an official decision as to whether classes will be held. The safety of students in
their travel, whether it is by bus or private vehicle, holds top priority. The decision is
always made no later than 6:00 a.m. of the day in question. After such decision is made,
local radio and television stations are contacted so that appropriate announcements can be
made. The SISD Website, as well as the Emergency Information Hot Line will post school
closings or delays. The Emergency Information Hot Line number is: 903-891-8333.

Student Attendance-Very Important!
Sherman parents and Sherman ISD
work well together to provide quality learning experiences for all children. As a reminder
of why attending school is vitally important, consider the following: State law requires
all children between the ages of six and eighteen to attend school. If a student is absent
from school ten days within a six month timeframe, state law requires schools to notify
parents that they and their child are subject to prosecution in Justice of the Peace
Court. A student must be in attendance at school at least ninety percent of the days to
receive academic credit and be eligible for promotion to the next grade level. Excessive
absences can result in loss of credit and force a student to repeat a grade level. SISD
teachers and staff strive to ensure that each student is equipped to excel in our
ever-changing world. For each subject, teachers plan daily lessons with new learning and a
wide variety of learning activities. New learning is often based on understanding prior
lessons. Sherman students work hard at school each day to apply new learning. To state the
obvious, students need to be in class to benefit from the interaction with teachers and
classmates. SISD is committed to preparing all students for success in life. Being at
school on time and ready to work every day are traits that will help students throughout
their adult life. We appreciate all our parents and staff who work together in the best
interests of children. Please contact your school principal, counselor, or teacher if you
have questions about school attendance.

SISD Announces Child Find Efforts
SISD offers
comprehensive special education services to eligible students ages three through 21 years
and to children from birth through age 21 years who have a hearing or visual impairment.
Children from birth to age three with other disabilities will be referred to appropriate
agencies for services. All referrals are considered confidential, and services are
provided at no cost. The parent, legal guardian, or surrogate parent retains the right to
refuse services and are provided other procedural safeguards under federal and state law.
Public school services include screening in areas of suspected disabilities, such as
vision, hearing, motor skills, speech, language, and general development. Evaluations in
the schools are provided for several areas of suspected disabilities, including learning
disabilities, speech and language development, physical impairments, vision or hearing
problems, mental retardation, emotional disturbances, autism/pervasive developmental
disorders, health impairments, or traumatic brain injuries. A free, appropriate, public
education with a full continuum of services is available. For more information concerning
eligibility criteria and referral procedures, contact the principal or counselor of your
local school or call the SISD Special Education Department at (903) 891-6439.
