The Sherman ISD staff is taking
precautionary measures to keep MRSA staph out of Sherman Schools. MRSA is a drug-resistant
strain of staph that has recently appeared in several north Texas Schools. There are
currently no reported cases of MRSA in the Sherman ISD. According to SISD nurse, Stacy
Evans, staph bacteria can spread through cuts and skin-to-skin contact. It may appear as a
small red bump or bumps that quickly turn painful and burrow deep in the skin. If left
untreated, it can advance to stages that cause life-threatening infections in bones, the
bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.
SISD director of maintenance and operations, Chuck Edwards began coordinating wipe down of
all athletic facility locker rooms and bathrooms. Mr. Edwards indicated, We take
this very seriously and will continue preventive measures until we are told to do
otherwise. SISD students can contribute to the districts efforts to keep
MRSA
out of SISD schools by encouraging and practicing frequent hand washing, keeping wounds
covered, not sharing towels and uniforms, and wiping down shared equipment. All teachers
have been notified to observe and report suspicious bumps or oozing wounds to the school
nurse and to be especially vigilant in keeping students hands clean. Parents can
assist by encouraging their students to practice these preventive measures at home.
