Each year, Sherman High School
freshmen GT students prepare an integrated, technology driven program to share with their
peers. The program is called, "Strolling through the Decades" and that is
exactly what they do. The students form groups and select a decade in the 20th century to
research. They learn the many different aspects of the decade, i.e., history, science,
literature, music, art, clothing, etc. Then they present their findings in a 30 minute
technology driven, multi-media presentation in the SHS Little Theater. The students went
all out this year, dressing in the styles of their particular decade, playing the pop
music of the times, and performing the dances to go along with it. Kayla Edwards, Jordan
Smith, Kelsey Travis, Lydia Morrow, Taylor Walker, and Karah Brant chose the 1920s
for their decade presentation. Complete with flapper girls, beads, and the Can,
Can dance, these students researched and shared their findings which included
everything from famous sports figures, (Jack Dempsey, Babe Ruth, Bill Tilden) and
entertainment, (Charlie Chaplin, who was against talking films because he said,
Actions speak louder than words.) to discoveries and inventions, (bobbie pins,
Henry Fords Model T, penicillin). Instructor Jan Wilson said that she looks forward
to this every year because the students continue to improve upon what was done the
previous year. Shown here is Taylor Walker explaining the fashion of the 1920s,
particularly the rising hemlines beginning in 1923 but falling back when the depression
hit in 1929.
