The Douglass Learning Center is a non-disciplinary school of
choice providing a unique approach to education for student's grades 9-12. The
DLC offers the opportunity for students to complete required coursework for graduation or
to earn credits in order to attain the proper level to return to Sherman High School.
Students requiring disciplinary action will be sent to AEP or back to Sherman High School.
Mission
The mission of the Douglass Learning Center is to insure that each
learner's individual needs are met to enrich their academic, emotional and social well
being through a school which offers an enriched curriculum through nontraditional methods.
Program Component
Central to the concept of the DLC is that instruction is presented on an
individual basis. It is an accelerated self-paced program. Students are
presented material at their own level and teachers closely monitor student achievement to
ensure that all students are working to the best of their ability.
A learning style inventory is used for each student and
the curriculum is either modified or enhanced to meet the unique needs of each individual
student. The curriculum has been designed by the content teacher and is
based on the TEKS as well as the district's curriculum requirements (SISDEKS). A TAKS
preparation and remedial course is also part of the curriculum. The DLC also requires the
satisfactory completion of an advisory component. |
