2009 Accountability Ratings

Sherman Independent School District

State Accountability Ratings

It’s a first for Sherman I.S.D.  Eight of ten campuses have been rated as “Exemplary” or “Recognized” in the State Accountability System.  Since the Texas Education Agency (TEA) started assigning “Exemplary” ratings over 15 years ago, Sherman I.S.D. has never had more than two campuses hit the highest mark.  After this past year, there are five “Exemplary” campuses, three “Recognized”, and two “Academically Acceptable”.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2009 State Accountability ratings for Texas public and charter schools on July 31, 2009.  School districts and campuses are designated as exemplary, recognized, academically acceptable, or academically unacceptable based on scores from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).  Additional criteria included in the district rating consists of completion rates for the prior year’s graduating class and dropout rates for seventh and eighth grade students.

Texas Education Agency State Accountability Ratings Summary

The Sherman I.S.D. has received a rating of “Academically Acceptable”, but only missed “Recognized” in one area by a few students.  Piner Middle and Sherman High School were in the same position as they were just a small number of students shy in one area of reaching a higher rating.  As a district, students posted a combined increase of 119 percentage points in “met standard” rates over 2008 in the core academic areas.  In the most difficult areas of math and science, the district realized double-digit gains among several student groups for a combined increase of 64 “met standard” percentage points.  The district also increased in the number of high school completers in every student group and maintained low dropout rates.

The five exemplary campuses included Fairview, Jefferson, Neblett, Sory, and Wakefield elementary schools.  The three recognized campuses included Crutchfield and Washington elementary schools, as well as Dillingham Intermediate which reached “Recognized” for the first time in history.  Piner Middle and Sherman High schools posted scores as high as possible to still be rated academically acceptable.  Finally, Perrin Learning Center was rated as acceptable, which is the highest rating that they could receive under the Alternative Education Accountability system.

Other items of note include increases in “met standard” rates in every core area and each of the five assessed student groups except for one.  There was a one point decrease in one of the twenty-five assessed areas, but the passing rate remained at an exemplary level above 90 percent.
