Experiencing War: Stories from the Veterans History Project
http://loc.gov/vets/stories/themes.html
The subjects of these pictures now seem so old to us. They wear older cuts of clothes and
sport odd hairstyles; yet these were the people that gave of themselves during wartime.
The Library of Congress has gathered multiple stories from veterans of American Wars,
including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and even the First Iraq War. Photos, audio
interviews, and manuscripts accompany most of the veterans' stories. This is an excellent
site for classroom use, especially with units designed to explore past generations.
Teach Vietnam: Echoes from the Wall
http://www.teachvietnam.org/
Echoes From The Wall is a real wealth of resources. Lesson plans may be accessed through
the Teachers' Guide link on the Educators page. The curriculum is broken down into six
modules: Escalating Involvement in the Vietnam War, Conflict on the Home Front, Those Who
Served, The Vietnamese and Vietnam, The Wall as Healer and The Legacy of the Vietnam War.
Each module contains a series of activities that may be used individually or as a whole.
Lesson plans may be downloaded from the site and printed for educational purposes. Other
segments include interactive timelines, first person stories, and much more.
Vietnam, 30 Years Beyond the War
http://www.mercurynewsphoto.com/story/vietnam30year/Vietnam30year.html#
This site offers three photo slideshows relating to the Vietnam War and its aftermath. The
work of an American photojournalist who has visited Vietnam numerous times since 1989, the
slideshows (one is captioned; one is vocalized) provide three different postwar
perspectives on the country. One tells of the efforts to rebuild the country's economy;
another tells of the undetected land mines that continue to kill and harm; the third is a
retrospective journey through the country.
Vietnam Women's Memorial Project
http://www.vietnamwomensmemorial.org/
Starts with a Flash intro that includes informative facts. Did you know that over 265,000
women served in the armed forces of the United States? Nearly 10,000 women in uniform
actually served in-country during the conflict. Articles describe the types of jobs women
performed during the war. Also includes first person narratives from women veterans,
information about the memorial, and links to more information.
Virtual Wall
http://www.thevirtualwall.org/
The Virtual Wall is a digital version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Users can view any of the 140 panels present on the actual memorial, see profiles of the
men and women who died in service to their country, read featured remembrances left at the
wall by visitors, and actually leave remembrances for individuals. The site presents a
daily and humbling reminder of the individuals lost in the war.
