Geometry Sites
Coolmath.Com
http://www.coolmath.com/home.htm
An amusement park of mathematics. There is a Kids section, a "13-100" section,
Parents, Teachers, Other Fun: Science, and a Games Section. Not to mention all the cool
stuff on their front page. There is a good game sectiontalk about making math not
only a mental challenge, but fun, too. Learn about Fractals, Alegebra, Geometry, Trig,
Calculus and much more, with some really helpful tips on how to suceed in math. This site
makes math really fun and cool.
EMR: Exercises in Math Readiness
http://math.usask.ca/emr/menu.html
The University of Saskatchewan offers an excellent site for the review of mathematical
concepts that students need to enter university level math courses. Topics include mental
arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions,
proofs, and set theory. Choose a subject and then select exercises at beginning, moderate,
or advanced levels. Solutions are provided so you can check your work. These are great
math exercises for students at the high school and even middle school levels, as well as
those reviewing for college.
Geometry Problem of the Week
http://mathforum.org/geopow/
Geometry: Step-by-Step From the Land of the Incas
http://agutie.homestead.com/files/index.html
This site has interesting and diverse content. There are traditional geometry problems
with animations, quizzes, Incan geometry, quotes by great thinkers, and an inspirational
philosophical animation.
Hitting the Target
http://www.hittingthetarget.com/
Here's an original approach to learning geometry, specifically angles. "Hitting the
Target" is designed to help children develop a better understanding of angles through
games that students can play individually or with others (a collaborative approach).
Because children can relate to sports, it can be an excellent vehicle for teaching
mathematics. Students choose a sport, and the game involving that sport begins.
Interactives, Geometry 3D Shapes
http://www.learner.org/interactives/geometry/
This resource investigates 3D shapes in Geometry. There are tutorials on surface area,
volume, Eulers Theorem, and platonic solids. There is also an introduction and an
interactive activity to test the students on skills taught.
InterMath: Constructionary
http://intermath.coe.uga.edu/construc/homepg.asp
This activity is meant to help learners create constructions using Geometers
Sketchpad. Click on a letter of the alphabet to obtain a list of constructions for that
letter (P: Parallelogram, Pyramid, Prism) and then click the numbers to 'construct' the
shape. Explanations are minimal so teacher involvement might be necessary.
MathMol K-12 Activity Page
http://edinfo.securesites.net/mathmol/
This site gives you many ideas on geometric and molecular structures to use in your K-12
classes.
National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html
Current mathematics instruction often fails to actively involve students. One way to
address the problem is through the use of manipulatives, physical objects that help
students visualize relationships and applications. We can now use computers to create
virtual learning environments to address the same goals. This is a three-year NSF
supported project to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual
manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics
instruction. The project is divided into these sections: Number & Operations; Algebra;
Geometry; Measurement; Data Analysis & Probability. Within each, you will find a good
selection of interactive applications for your K-12 students.
Pattern Blocks
http://gingerbooth.com/shapegame/
Create your own tessalations by dragging pattern blocks! Click on the blocks to rotate
them. Click on a color on the right and then click on the block to change its color. Click
the ? for directions.
PBS Teacher Source: Math
http://www.pbs.org/teachers
PBS TeacherSource provides math lesson plans and activities for all grade levels,
preschool through high school. For instance, choose Geometry for grades 3-5 and get 42
projects ranging from bridge building to tessellations to the geometry of bike design to
"Sir Cumference and the First Round Table." Many activities are interactive and
you can match the activity to your state standards.
Project Interactivate
http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/
Project Interactive consists of Java-based courseware including lesson plans, activities,
tools, and a dictionary for exploration of science and mathematics. Lessons give teachers
a script to follow when using the activities and related discussions. Each lesson gives
prerequisites, preparation instructions, a suggested outline, and alternate outlines.
Teachers who have designed alternative versions of lessons are encouraged to submit them
to the Interactivate Archives. The lessons are arranged according to the NCTM Principles
and Standards for School Mathematics and the NCEE Performance Standards for Middle School.
Specific areas include: Number and Operation Concepts; Geometry and Measurement; Function
and Algebra Concepts; and Probability and Data Analysis.
Sagwa Tangrams
http://pbskids.org/sagwa/games/tangrams/index.html
PBS Kids provides a collection of tangram puzzles that students can easily manipulate and
replicate. Puzzles are organized by ability level so students may select easy or more
difficult puzzles. This is a highly interactive site with great animation and sound
effects. There are also inks to other PBS Kids games and activities.
Science U: The Geometry Center
http://www.scienceu.com/geometry/
Shapes, patterns, and symmetry are the thems of the Geometry Center at Science U (which
also has an ovservatory, library and studio). The site includes Triangle Tilings and
Polyhedra, Symmetry and Tiling, and Tetrahedral Puzzles. A colorful and entertaining site!
Shape and Space in Geometry
http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/geometry/index.html
This site offers you a fun and colorful, instructive and practical way to deal with
geometry. Experience the geometry of real things: how big they are, whether they fit, how
to find them, and what they look like in a mirror. The lab activities included in this
site are divided into two broad categories: the section About Shape centers on identifying
properties of various shapes and measuring their dimensions, and the activities in the
About Space section focus on moving objects-or yourself-around in your imagination, and
visualizing how things will look.
Virtual Geometry (Grades 9-12)
http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/category_g_4_t_3.html
The page is a portal to a collection of virtual manipulatives nearly 30 in all,
arranged alphabetically from Cob Web Plot to Turtle Geometry. Besides the manipulatives,
each topic (i.e. "Tanagrams") offers a complete explanation and a list of
appropriate standards.
What's My Angle?
http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/protractor.html
Students can learn the fundamentals of using a protractor by interacting with these
activities.
