The Douglass Learning Center is a non-disciplinary school of choice providing a
unique approach to education for students grades 9-12. The DLC offers the
opportunity for students to complete required coursework for graduation or to earn credits
in order to attain the proper level to return to Sherman High School. Students requiring
disciplinary action will be sent to AEP or back to Sherman High School.
The mission of the Douglass Learning Center is to insure that each learners
individual needs are met to enrich their academic, emotional and social well being through
a school which offers an enriched curriculum through non-traditional methods.
Central to the concept of the DLC is that instruction is presented on an individual
bases. It is an accelerated self-paced program. Students are presented material at
their own level and teachers closely monitor student achievement to ensure that all
students are working to the best of their ability. A learning style inventory is
used for each student and the curriculum is either modified or enhanced to meet the unique
needs of each individual student. The curriculum has been designed by the content
teacher and is based on the TEKS as well as the districts curriculum requirements
(SISDEKS). A TAKS preparation and remedial course is also part of the curriculum. The DLC
also requires the satisfactory completion of the advisory component.
1. Report to school on time each day with a positive attitude.
2. Follow school and classroom rules and require no disciplinary action.
3. Show consideration and respect for students, staff, and facility.
4. Demonstrate academic progress in each class daily.
GENERAL SCHOOL RULES
Success at the Douglass Learning Center depends a great deal on being present at school
each day. Students with good attendance generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school
more. THERE IS ALSO A DIRECT LINK BETWEEN POOR ATTENDANCE AND ACADEMIC FAILURE.
Parents must call the school (891-6551) when a student is absent. Excused absences
include:
1. Personal illness
2. Medical or dental appointments (Please bring a note from the Physician).
3. Death in family
4. Personal or family emergencies
5. Legal subpoenas or required court appearances
6. Teen parent absences to care for a sick child
7. Approved college visitations
Unexcused absences will result in the student being dropped from Douglas Learning
Center and returned to Sherman High School.
Tardies will accumulate throughout the semester. Unless the principal determines that
extenuating circumstances existed, disciplinary action for tardies will be as follows:
1st Tardy Warning
2nd Tardy 30 minutes (before or after school)
*3rd Tardy 1 hour (before or after school)
*4th Tardy 1 ½ hours (before or after school)
*5th Tardy Saturday Detention (9 am-12 noon)
*6th Tardy Saturday Detention (9 am-12 noon)
*7th Tardy Removed to AEP or sent back to Sherman High School
*Parent Contacted
Students must remain on campus once they have arrived. The DLC operates a closed
campus. If you must leave during the school day, you are to check out through the school
office. Parental/Guardian permission is required.
We welcome all visitors; however, all visitors to the Douglass Learning Center must
report to the main office. No provisions are made for student visitors during the school
day. Students should NOT bring friends to school with them.
The Douglass Learning Center follows the calendar of Sherman I.S.D.
ATTIRE AND GROOMING
REGULATIONS
Since the DLC is primarily a place to learn, it is imperative that parents, students,
and staff assume and share responsibility for maintaining an optimum environment. Students
are expected to be clean, neat, well groomed and appropriately dressed at school.
The Standard of Dress Required By The DLC Must Be Maintained At All Times. The
principal has the final say as to what is proper.
Students may not:
1. Have body piercing anywhere except the ear
2. Have hair dyed or spray painted to an unnatural color.
3. Wear head covers of any kind.
4. Wear or display any item or color that is designed to bring attention to the student
or that disrupts the educational process.
Violating the rules of the handbook will result in dismissal from the
program.
Becoming an effective and responsible parent when you are still growing up yourself,
presents tremendous challenges and responsibilities to teenagers who are pregnant and who
have young children. The Douglass Learning Center provides a program that hopes to support
and help students stay in school before and after pregnancy. Via a network of academic and
support services, the districts Pregnancy Education & Parenting Program provides
teenage parents the opportunity to complete their education, work toward productive
careers, receive comprehensive training in parenting skills in order to prepare for
successful and productive lives.
The components of the program include:
ACADEMIC: A modified 4-hour day with curriculum that is accelerated paced.
SUPPORT SERVICES: Individual, group and career counseling is offered. There is also
close contact with other agencies so that information and access to social services is
available. Other services include a parenting skill program, transportation and day care
through the early head start program or local daycare contractors.
Educational services for Teen Moms after delivery are provided at the Douglass Learning
Center. A homebound teacher will visit the student four hours a week until a release from
the physician permits the student to return to school full-time. Assignments will be
provided to the homebound teacher from the Douglass Learning Center staff. Laptop
computers will be checked out to parents in order to maintain instruction through computer
assisted instruction.
LIBRARY and MEDIA CENTER
The library and media center are both available to all students to provide materials
and services that reinforce individual learning styles, supplement specific curriculum
needs, support the Teen Parent Program and promote literacy. There is assistance available
if needed. The library is completely automated. The students also have access to the
Internet (if Computer Use Form is signed).
Reference materials are to stay in the library, but the student may come in to work on
their projects at any time.
Fines are not enforced at this campus, but we do ask that the student take care of and
return the book when due. If a student damages a book, he/she is responsible for damage
assessment. Books, which are lost, must be paid for in full at replacement cost before
any other materials may be checked out. Books are checked out for a 2-week period with
a limit of 3 books at a time.
You are welcome to our library and media center at any time. Come in and READ TO
SUCCEED!!!
The teacher(s) will give students not making adequate progress an intervention plan for
a two-week period. If the intervention plan is not completed, the student will be placed
on probation with a schedule.
At the end of each semester, students are evaluated on academic progress, attendance,
and attitude. Students lacking in any of these will not be allowed to return.

is illegal, or any material or object which violates a school rule or poses a hazard to

students, their lockers, their motor vehicles and personal property when they have
